Nintendo is killing it this year

On the heels of last week’s launch of Super Mario Odyssey, Nintendo has shared some figures from this year, and they’re mighty impressive.
Starting with the Switch, Nintendo said it has sold nearly 8 million units since it launched in March, which is a crazy figure considering the console has yet to experience the holiday pandemonium (or Black Friday, for that matter). To put that figure into context, Nintendo managed to sell 13.56 million Wii U units in the entirety of its 4.5-year lifespan.
Speaking of the Switch, two of its biggest games, Super Mario Odyssey and Zelda: Breath of the Wild, have been incredibly popular. Breath of the Wild has sold 4.7 million copies, while Super Mario Odyssey has already surpassed 2 million copies sold. That just goes to show two of its oldest properties are still its most popular.
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (4.42 million copies), Splatoon 2 (3.61 million copies), and 1-2 Switch (1.37) were among its most popular first-party titles. It’s unclear how many copies of indie games like Golf Story and Stardew Valley have sold, but the Switch has become a mecca for indie titles.
Again, all of these figures are before the upcoming holiday season, so you have to imagine they’ll go up significantly before the year is up. And the fact that the Switch may be easy to find before 2018 will make a lot of people happy.
Nintendo also said it sold nearly two million units of the SNES Classic, compared to roughly 200,000 units of the NES Classic. Gee, you wonder how many Nintendo could see if these things were actually in stock.
The Switch is getting several other big titles in the coming months, including Wolfenstein 2, Doom, and L.A. Noire. Needless to say, Nintendo is doing just fine.
